TU Medical Laboratory Science students win in poster competition
Post Published On:Three of Thomas University’s Medical Laboratory Science students competed in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science’s Georgia State Society meeting held March 7 at the Wellstar Development Center in Atlanta. TU’s students took a clean sweep of the undergraduate category in the competition.
Savannah Pickens of Milledgeville, Georgia, won first place with her poster “Implementing a New Hematology Analyzer to Improve Services and Expand Revenue.” Her research focused on determining which analyzers several hematology departments used and comparing the cost per test of two analyzers to determine which would be the best investment for a laboratory.
Matthew Poncin of Dallas, Texas, took home second place with his poster presentation “Implementation of the Verax Platelet PGD Test.” His research examined how well a test could detect bacteria in platelets to make them safer for patients and extend their expiration date from five to seven days.
Mary Beth Wolfe of Vidalia, Georgia, won third place with her poster “Implementation of Vitamin D Testing: Advantages in the Laboratory.” Her research focused on the possibility of conducting vitamin D 23-hydroxy testing in the in-house laboratory at Meadows Regional Medical Center rather than sending samples to an outside lab for testing. She found the switch would generate income for the hospital and provide quicker test results.
