TU to host Geeks vs. Guardians 5k Fun Run on Nov. 12
Post Published On:Sneakers will be laced up across Forbes Campus as Thomas University hosts the first-ever Geeks vs. Guardians 5k Fun Run on Saturday, Nov. 12. Registration and check-in begin at 7:30 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m.
The idea is that TU’s students, faculty and staff (the geeks) will engage in a friendly competition with current and former members of the armed forces (the guardians). Whoever has the most runners with the best times in each age category wins bragging rights in the event that’s intended to bring the community together to celebrate the military.
“With Veterans Day being the day before, we want to show appreciation for nation’s veterans,” said Stephen Ferguson, TU’s Vice President for Military and Corporate Relations. “We also want to bring our community out to campus around our military programs. We’ve really grown our partnerships with our armed services over the past several years. We want to host an event that will bring everyone together.”
The course will begin on TU Forbes Campus at the corner of Pinetree Boulevard and Millpond Road. From there the course will wind through the neighborhood north and east of campus. Plaques will be awarded to the top male and female runner in each age category. Registration is free for TU students and military-affiliated runners. The entry fee is $25 for everyone else by Oct. 28 or $35 the day of the event. Those who don’t want to run are welcome to walk the course.
After the race, a day of family events are planned on TU’s Forbes Campus. Food trucks will be on hand. TU’s military partners will have displays and activities for children and adults.
“I hope the community gets an understanding of the military programming that we have established at TU over the last six years, and they have an opportunity to be involved in something TU is doing,” Ferguson said.
