Public Relations Specialist
Full-Time Non-Exempt
SUMMARY:
The Public Relations Specialist is responsible for all media relations and communications for the University. This includes developing and disseminating news to location and national media, contributing to University publications such as the Annual Report, assisting internal constituents with promotion of initiatives.
- Create Public Relations plans and strategies
- Serve as a first contact person for all media queries
- Write press releases, media announcements, media summaries, speeches and other Public Relations copy.
- Proofread and edit written communications for the University as requested.
- Manage media requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Organize, schedule and prepare key leaders for press interviews; provide training as appropriate.
- Pitch story ideas and content to media.
- Write and coordinate copy for newsletters: alumni, internal and students.
- Develop and implement the University’s Crisis Communication Plan. Provide effective crisis management solutions in times of need.
- Serve as primary point of contact for crisis communication through Blackboard Connect. Ensure student and employee lists are up-to-date.
- Build and maintain targeted media lists, and nurture relationships with key reporters
- Track and analyze the effectiveness of PR campaigns and communicate insights to management
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including athletics, advancement and faculty to identify and promote activities and other story pitches.
- Coordinate PR activities with social media specialist for consistency.
- Assist with photography and video at events and with individuals as needed.
- Assist in development of articles for the Annual Report.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, communications, journalism or similar relevant field
- Two to three years public relations experience
- Applicable knowledge in copywriting and editing
- Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills
- Attention to details
REPORTS TO: Director of Marketing
