Thomas University’s first-in-the-nation Military Transition Football Team will kick off its first away game of the 2024 season at the historic A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus, GA.

The team will face off against Bethel University at noon on Saturday, September 14, 2024. The 15,000-seat stadium is located at 400 4th St. in Columbus, near the military base of Fort Moore, formerly known as Fort Benning.

“This event is particularly significant as it takes place in the home of Fort Moore, a cornerstone of military excellence and community,” Stephen Ferguson, Vice President of Military and Corporate Relations for Thomas University, said. “It is an honor to bring our program to such a historic and supportive environment, and we look forward to showcasing the talents and dedication of our players.”

The first-of-its-kind football program consists of military-affiliated players including veterans, national guard, and reserves. Since its debut last season, the program has received numerous recognitions.

Team captain Matthew Bowman, a United States Marine Corps veteran, was presented with the 2024 Student Veteran Athlete of the Year Award by Viqtory Media. He was honored with the award for demonstrating exceptional prowess as a student veteran athlete, a dedicated student, and a valuable contributor to his academic institution and community.

The military transition football program was also named a finalist for the Armed Forces Merit Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America. The Armed Forces Merit Award honors an individual and/or a group with a military background and/or involvement that has an impact within the realm of college football.
