Director of Human Resources
Overview
Thomas University is seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead and manage all aspects of human resource functions, including recruitment, employee relations, compliance, training, benefits administration, and payroll. The ideal candidate will be a strategic HR leader with experience in higher education or a similar organizational setting. This role requires expertise in employment law, compliance, Title IX, employee engagement, and workforce development.
The Director of Human Resources will also be responsible for teaching one to two courses per calendar year in business or human resources, contributing to the academic mission of Thomas University.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract top talent.
• Manage the full recruitment cycle, including job postings, screening, interviewing, and onboarding.
• Develop selection criteria to ensure candidates align with Thomas University’s culture and mission.
Employee Relations & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws as well as university policies, example IPEDS.
• Title IX compliance related to employee concerns and investigations in cooperation with Title IX Coordinator.
• Manage employee relations, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and performance management.
• Represent the university in DOL hearings for unemployment and workers’ compensation claims.
• Develop and implement HR policies and procedures to prevent legal and ethical violations.
• Collaborate with VP of HR as needed to address complex compliance issues.
Training & Development
• Design and facilitate employee training programs, including orientation, leadership development, and customer service training.
• Coach managers on best HR practices, compliance, and employee engagement.
• Promote professional growth by creating opportunities for employee development and career advancement.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
• Oversee benefits enrollment, claims processing, and retirement plan administration (403(b) and 457 plans).
• Oversee the HR Administrator and ensure accurate and timely payroll processing.
• Manage payroll systems such as EverFi, Benatrac, PayChex, Background screenings, MVR’s, and Tuition Remission.
Compliance & Risk Management
• Ensure organizational behavior aligns with university standards of conduct.
• Monitor and report on HR compliance matters, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
• Provide regular reports to VP of HR on HR processes, compliance, and employee engagement.
Leadership & Culture Development
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaged workplace culture.
• Serve as a team leader with an open-door policy, providing support and mentorship to staff.
• Partner with VP of HR to align HR initiatives with institutional goals.
Teaching & Academic Contributions
• Teach one to two courses per calendar year in business or human resources.
Qualifications & Experience
• Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 5+ years of HR leadership experience in a complex organization.
• Strong knowledge of employment law, regulatory compliance, and HR best practices.
• Experience handling Title IX-related employee matters.
• Proficiency in HR technology and payroll systems.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
• Experience in higher education HR management.
• Background in customer service training and workforce engagement.

Terms of Employment:
· Full benefits, Full-Time, 12 months.
· Non-Exempt position, 40 hours/week.
Work Conditions:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Work is normally performed inside under normal office conditions and employee may be exposed to varying temperatures, humidly and moderate noise.
Work requires:
· Keying data into computer repeatedly during an 8-hour shift.
· Ability to lift/carry and push/pull a minimum of 15 lbs.
