Thomas University adjunct professor and mentor Kelli Dorminey was the recipient of the 2023-2024 Georgia Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (GACTE) Southwest P20 Collaborative Outstanding Mentor Award.

The award recognizes teacher mentors who demonstrate excellence in fostering mentee’s intellectual growth and development, provide meaningful professional guidance, act as mentee’s sponsor for his/her preparation in terms of robust experiences, and consistently models advocacy for the profession.

“I am surprised and honored,” Dorminey said. “I have had good mentors and they have gotten me to where I am now—10 years into teaching.”

In addition to her roles at Thomas University, Dorminey is a fourth grade teacher who teaches English Language Arts at Cross Creek Elementary in Thomasville.

During the official announcement of the award at Cross Creek Elementary in September, Dr. Lisa Williams, Superintendent of Thomas County Schools said, Dorminey is a bright and shining star.

“She has always gone above and beyond, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that,” Williams said. “She is always willing to do anything without hesitation, so I thank her. I thank her for serving as a mentor to our numerous teachers and as well as TU teachers. You have done an excellent job.”

Dorminey received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Thomas University. She also earned her Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership from Thomas University.

“We are so grateful for Kelli,” said Dr. Susan Lynn, Professor and Chair of the Division of Education.
