Senior Accountant
Purpose of Position: The senior accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures.
Position Summary: Management, development, and maintenance of accounting records, processing of accounting transactions, reconciliation of accounts, and closing of accounting records. Ensure all accounting transactions are recorded accurately using generally accepted accounting principles. Ensure all account reconciliations are completed accurately and timely. Determine fiscal year end transaction processing to meet closing deadlines and ensure proper closing of accounting records.
Responsibilities:
- Work as an integral member of our Finance and Budgeting team.
- Prepare monthly journal entries as assigned
- Prepare monthly variance analysis for month-end close meetings, both P&L and balance sheet analysis
- Prepare monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts
- Ensure 100% controllership integrity
- Develop and maintain internal operating policies and procedures that maximizes the use of accounting technologies, including, but not limited to, the general ledger, accounts payable and purchase order modules
- Ensure finance policies and guidelines are met satisfactorily during review/audit periods
- Assist in driving finance/controllership change initiatives through process improvements to gain efficiencies as needed
- Initiate monthly draws of Federal Direct Loan and other Financial Aid sources
- Support Accounting Managers with Ad hoc reporting and special projects as required
- Provide insight and accounting solutions to diverse members of TU, by demonstrating a deep understanding of professional accounting and bookkeeping practices and leveraging relevant software and technology platforms.
- Record journal entries, review work papers, reconcile accounts, and prepare month-end closings.
- Develop relationships with TU faculty and staff to assess their needs and recommend opportunities for improvements to efficiency, effectiveness and internal controls.
- Become a vital part of TU’s decision-making process by interpreting financial reports and producing budget to actual analysis and key trends
- Answer departmental inquiries regarding their budgets and departmental accounts
- Assist in the annual financial statement audit preparation with reconciliations
- Assist the Controller and Finance/Budget Managers with special projects.
Preferred qualifications include:
- 3+ years of experience in accounting and bookkeeping
- Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple client projects with weekly and monthly deliverables
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organized, detail oriented, and quality-focused
- Willingness and ability to learn new technological platforms
- Ability to work with a sense of urgency and flexibility
- Great customer service skills
- Experience with Great Plains, Microsoft Word and Excel, and various ERP and accounting software programs
