Thomas University celebrates Disability Awareness Month with variety of activities
Post Published On:Thomas University’s Office of Disability Services and Student Life teamed up to plan events for October’s Disability Awareness Month to help increase TU students’ understanding of disabilities.
From noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, “Doggies and Donuts” will be held in the TU Library for students who would like to take a study break, eat a pastry and enjoy some pet therapy. Throughout October, signs will be placed around campus that will each include a disability fact. Richard Curtis, TU’s Associate Professor of Art, will have an art exhibit for Disability Awareness Month on display in Smith-Bonvillian Hall.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Disability Awareness Festival on the Forbes Campus will include activities such as a wheelchair obstacle course and painting using your hands or feet. The first 40 TU students who attend will receive free T-shirts. Food will be available for purchase from Rocco’s Italian Streetfood of Moultrie, which will have a food truck at the event and Gurlie’s Lemonade and Fried Oreos. Student organizations are welcome to volunteer to help with the various activities at the event.
On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Jennifer Msumba will perform in concert at the pavilion on TU’s Magnolia Campus beginning at 6:30 p.m. An autistic filmmaker and musician, she is best known for her award-winning film “The Fish Don’t Care When It Rains.” A member of American Mensa and a Sundance Institute Fellow, Msumba creates positive and upbeat films and music with the intrinsic strength that comes from surviving adversity. Audience members are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs. The community is welcome to attend. For more information about Msumba, visit jennifermsumba.com.
During Msumba’s concert, food will be available for purchase from Debbie’s Chuckwagon BBQ food truck and BK’s Ice Cone food truck.
