Thomas University Football to Play at Veterans Memorial Stadium

Thomas University’s football team will make its historic debut at the legendary Veterans Memorial Stadium on Sept. 2.
The military transition football team, comprised of veterans, national guard, and reserves, will play its four home games at the stadium, located at 701 E. Jackson St. in Thomasville.
Thomas University will be sharing the turf with Thomasville High School.
“I want to thank the Thomasville City School District for allowing TU to use the stadium,” Orlando Mitjans, Thomas University head football coach, said. “We definitely want to thank the school, the administrators and athletic staff for their hospitality and collaboration so we can have our games played there. We are looking forward to having a long relationship with the school; but not only with the school, but also with its athletes.”
In June 1948, the Thomasville High School ‘Touchdown Club’ requested the stadium be renamed to Veterans Memorial Stadium to commemorate World War II veterans from Thomas County.
Douglass High School also played at Veterans Memorial and was also considered a football powerhouse in the largely segregated football leagues during the 1950s and early 60s. The stadium was segregated until the 1970s.
“It seems especially fitting for TU’s Military Transition Football program to be playing at ‘Veterans Memorial Stadium’,” Stephen Ferguson, Vice President of Military and Corporate Relations at Thomas University, said. “Thomasville and the surrounding communities have been extremely supportive of TU’s military related programming, which speaks magnitudes about the fiber of the community and its residents. We look forward to the kickoff of our inaugural season, and bringing the community together under such a great cause.”
The Night Hawks open its Fall 2022-23 football season against Speight Academy at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Information about start times and ticket sales will be available soon.
